The King's Return
Under the wise and righteous King Mufasa, the Pride Lands prospered on the wide savannahs of Africa. All the creatures lived in peace and harmony under the strong and compassionate authority of the golden lion. Standing next to him were Simba, the cub who would one day inherit the throne, and his queen Sarabi.
Simba had an exciting and inquisitive upbringing. He was taught about the Circle of Life, the delicate balance that maintained the Pride Lands' prosperity, by Mufasa. Taking Simba to the summit of Pride Rock frequently, Mufasa showed him the expansive kingdom and told him that one day he would have to defend it all. Admiring his father, Simba was keen to emulate him.
Not everyone, though, was as excited about Simba's prospects. Mufasa's younger brother Scar carried a great deal of bitterness and jealousy. Scar had always wanted the throne, and the birth of Simba crushed his dreams of ruling at all. Crafty and deceitful, Scar strategized in the shadows, biding his time to attack.
One day, Scar tricked Simba into going into the forbidden and hazardous Elephant Graveyard. Along with his closest buddy Nala, Simba bravely headed there, wanting to show off his courage. They were soon surrounded by a Scar-loyal group of hyenas. Mufasa came in time to save them just as it appeared like they would be overwhelmed. His roar reverberated throughout the cemetery as he drove the hyenas away.
Father chastised Simba, stressing the value of accountability and the perils of carelessness. Simba, humbled, vowed to exercise greater caution, but Scar remained unmoved. He devised a darker scheme that would see him lose both Simba and Mufasa.
Scar guided Simba to a ravine one fateful day and instructed him to wait there for his father's surprise. Knowing that Simba would be entangled in the stampede, Scar, in the meantime, planned a wildebeest stampede. Fearing that Simba was in danger, Scar hurried to Mufasa as the earth trembled with the thunderous hooves of the wildebeest.
Simba was saved by Mufasa, who raced to the gorge and perched him on a precipice. But just as Mufasa was straining to free himself, Scar materialized above him. Scar betrayed his brother and sent Mufasa back into the throng to die, rather than assisting him.
Scar tricked a distraught and guilty Simba into thinking he was to blame for his father's passing. Scar pushed Simba to run away and never come back. Simba fled the Pride Lands, lost and confused, vanishing into the wide desert.
Scar took the throne and ruled with brutality and disregard. Under his despotism, the Pride Lands collapsed and the Circle of Life was disrupted. Simba, meanwhile, went far from home before passing out from weariness. Timon and Pumbaa, a warthog and a meerkat, discovered him and brought him back to health. Simba attempted to put his past behind him as they instilled in him their carefree attitude, "Hakuna Matata," which means "no worries."
Simba developed into a powerful lion throughout the years, yet he never completely lost sight of his father and his real home. Nala, who had been looking for assistance to rescue the Pride Lands, discovered one day
Simba. She informed him of the destruction caused by Scar's reign on their house. Simba was first hesitant since he was still carrying the weight of the guilt that he had killed Mufasa. However, Simba made the decision to go back after receiving support from Nala and a glimpse of his father's ghost reminding him of his obligation.
At Pride Rock, Simba confronted Scar, and that's when it was finally revealed that Scar had slain Mufasa. Driven by fury and a feeling of fairness, Simba declared his candidacy for the throne over Scar. Scar was vanquished by Simba in a bloody struggle, and the hyenas he had formerly ruled went to consume Scar.
Once Scar was gone, Simba ascended to the throne as the legitimate king. Under his reign, the Pride Lands started to mend, with the Circle of Life being restored. Simba accepted his destiny to govern and defend the Pride Lands, just as his father had done before him, completing the cycle of his development from a playful cub to a brave and wise king.
