The Golden Egg-Laiding Goose
There there was a poor farmer who lived in a little village. He possessed a little farm with a cow, some goats, and a goose, and his family was not very large. The farmer never dreamed that the goose, which had an ordinary appearance, would have such a profound impact on his life.
When the farmer went to gather eggs from his livestock one morning, he observed something out of the ordinary. An egg that glowed brightly was found in the goose's nest. When the farmer picked it up, he discovered that the egg was composed of pure gold, even though at first he believed it was a trick of the light!
The farmer was stunned and incredulous at his good fortune. He hurried to the closest town and presented the jeweler with the golden egg. The jeweler examined the egg and declared it to be pure gold. The farmer made a substantial profit on the sale of the egg and went back home with visions of a better life.
When the farmer excitedly went back to the goose's nest the following morning, he was ecstatic to see another golden egg! The farmer's fortune increased quickly as the goose kept laying golden eggs every day. In addition to building an addition to his home, he also purchased more property for his farm.
After years of financial hardship, he and his family were again enjoying a luxurious lifestyle.
But the farmer's pleasure gave way to greed as the days went by. "There must be a way to get all the eggs at once if this goose can lay one golden egg every day," he reasoned to himself. I might then become unimaginably wealthy!"
The farmer's greed got the better of him, and he was preoccupied with thoughts of the possible wealth hiding inside the goose. Unable to appreciate his newfound prosperity, he grew restless because he wanted more, and he wanted it all at once.
The farmer killed the goose and removed all of the golden eggs at once one day because he was too greedy to keep his mouth shut. "Why should I wait for one egg a day when I can have them all now?" he said.
The farmer got a knife and sliced open the geese without thinking twice. To his dismay, however, there were only the typical geese insides—not any golden eggs. The farmer's source of money vanished forever along with the miraculous goose.
The farmer was inconsolable. He realized that he had ruined the exact thing that had made him prosperous out of selfishness. Golden eggs would no longer exist, nor would money or an opulent lifestyle. All he could think of was remorse.
The farmer's fortune diminished over time. He was forced to sell his farm and home, and soon after, he discovered that he was once again impoverished and having difficulty making ends meet. Once envious of his good riches, the villagers now feel sorry for him because of his ignorance.
The farmer had discovered the hard truth that everything can be destroyed by greed. He could have spent the rest of his life in comfort if he had been happy with the golden egg he got every day. However, his failure was caused by his unquenchable thirst for more.
The villagers and others heard the tale of the farmer and the golden-egg-laying goose. For everyone who heard it, it turned into a warning story, serving as a reminder that greed may be harmful. In the end, those who are unable to accept what they already have and are constantly seeking more will lose everything.
The story's straightforward lesson is to be happy with what you have and not allow greed to influence your decisions. True pleasure does not come from pursuing more than you need; rather, it comes from learning to appreciate the blessings you already have.
Ultimately, the farmer's tale serves as a warning on the need to manage riches and success with caution and discernment. While greed can result in disaster, contentment, and patience can bring long-lasting satisfaction.
Thus, never forget the parable of the goose that lays the golden eggs: sometimes, little is more, and having a little patience will go a long way toward guaranteeing a happy and meaningful existence.
